The reason

Some tools are worth keeping alive.

There are newer watches — more accurate, more comfortable, more everything. I enjoy them too.

But an Ambit is like driving a classic car: it's home.

Newer watches have the convenience of changing settings on the go through your smartphone. Ambits lost that. Because of it, a lot of watches went into a drawer. Some went into landfill.

Sommet brings those abilities back, and adds a lot on top. The whole point is to keep these classic instruments — and the old computers and phones that run the app — out of the bin and out on the trail a little longer.

Sommet also brings the desktop back to these watches — whether you love a big screen or you're now into the “dumb phone” scene, Sommet has you covered.

— built in stubbornness, coffee & good will · vibe-coded with AI + community work

“Fortunately we live in wonderful times. With AI and community work — why not get those lost features back and even more?”

Out on the trail

navigation · settings

Routes

Send a GPX route to your wrist with a preview map, and read routes back off the watch to GPX.

Points of interest

Add waypoints by searching a map or typing coordinates. Export the POIs already on the watch.

Orbital GPS data

Push the latest satellite almanac so the watch finds GPS — and GLONASS — far faster outdoors.

Sport modes

A full editor: create, delete, rename modes, set auto-lap and HR limits, choose sensors, lay out the data screens, choose apps, etc

Watch settings

Read and write units and personal info.

Device manual

Download the official PDF manual for your exact watch, straight from the app.

activities · training

Activities

Download recorded workouts, view them on a map with an elevation profile and route replay.

Export & upload

Save as GPX or FIT, or send to Strava, Runalyze and intervals.icu — local or cloud.

Calendar & totals

A visual training diary of the days you moved, plus lifetime totals with a few fun facts.

Training coach extra

A readiness “traffic light” and a chat coach that reads your own data — offline for the basics.

HRV & wellness extra

Heart-rate variability from the watch's raw beats; resting HR & weight can also be imported from intervals.icu if you other devices.

Gear tracker extra

Track bikes, shoes and parts with maintenance reminders before something wears out on you.

03

Keep it alive

backup · repair

Backup & restore

Safe backups of routes, POIs and firmware to a folder.

Firmware flasher

Install firmware over USB.

Heart-rate sensor

Connect a Suunto HR chest strap and check its battery level and firmware version.

Interval builder

A visual workout builder for structured intervals — a workout on the Ambit 3, or an app for Ambit 1/2.

Guided interval workouts

A lost Movescount feature, revived for the Ambit 3 — with an intervals.icu-to-Ambit converter.

Kailash travel log extra

Read travel history, countries & places visited, set your Home Location.

No fine print

A few honest limitations.

  • BluetoothWorks fully on Android and iOS. On the desktop app, on my hardware, it was reliable on the first pair, flaky after, so it ships as an opt-in experiment.
  • FirmwareSommet can flash firmware — tested on five devices across different operating systems — but SuuntoLink is still the recommended tool for routine updates; the flasher is an emergency fallback.
  • Not yet backTraining plans in the watch menu aren't fully revived yet — but there's a workaround on the Ambit 3: a guided workout named after the day.
  • TestingTested and verified on real hardware: Ambit 1, 2, 3r/3s/3 Peak, Traverse and Kailash. The rest of the range shares the same internals and is expected to work, but hasn't all been confirmed.
  • As-isProvided with no warranty, for use on your own hardware at your own risk. If a watch ever misbehaves, SuuntoLink can always reset it.
Where we stand

Grateful

Suunto has spent decades building outdoor instruments worth keeping, and their modern watches and app are genuinely excellent — SuuntoLink and the Suunto app serve them well. Sommet exists to complement it, add features or ease of use.

Sommet is an independent, unofficial community project — not affiliated with, nor endorsed by, Suunto or Garmin. It builds on the openambit and opensportsync work, and hopes to give a little back to that community.

The Kailash.

Named after the 6,000-metre holy peak in Tibet. Titanium and sapphire, light enough to forget you're wearing it — and quietly keeping a logbook of where you've been: countries visited, and the exact distance and bearing home from wherever you land. Its Adventure Timeline reads time, altitude and sunrise/sunset at a glance.

It shipped iPhone-only. Sommet gives it a home on your Android or computer — travel history, places & countries visited, Home Location — over USB and Bluetooth.

These are really legacy devices. Since there were projects that made them easier to use and kept them alive, they were included. Hopefully, this can motivate someone to get back on the active side.

Give back

How to contribute.

Sommet is free and always will be. If it kept one of your watches out of a drawer, here are the ways to help keep the project — and these devices — alive.

Donate

Donations are welcome and go straight back into the project. PayPal goes straight through; for MB WAY, Wero or a bank transfer, email me and I'll send the details — no numbers on the page.

Send captures of watches I don't have

The best way to add support for a device is to see its data. If you own a watch that isn't fully supported yet, a capture of it helps enormously — get in touch and I'll explain how.

Your time & skills

Fix a bug, implement a feature, improve the docs, translate the app. Pull requests and ideas are all welcome — no experience required, just good will.

Share it

Tell someone with an old Ambit in a drawer. The more people who put these devices back to use, the fewer end up in the landfill.

First aid

I loved my watch,but…

The common ways an old Ambit stops working — and the simple fixes that usually bring it back.

  • Dead batteryA replacement cell and a bit of patience does it — Amazon, AliExpress and YouTube are your friends. Plenty of teardown videos walk you through it.
  • Broken strapSuunto still sells replacement straps new — and Amazon, AliExpress and the rest have them too. A five-minute swap.
  • Stuck on the “connect to Moveslink” iconCharge it overnight, connect and disconnect it once on SuuntoLink, then reset the firmware. That clears it in almost every case.

Then get Sommet and bring it back to life

Thank you

Built on the real work of others.

Reverse-engineering & knowledge

  • openambit — libambit, the reference the USB/BLE protocol work is checked against (GPLv3).
  • opensportsync — the starting point for the Android app.
  • marguslt — firmware-download recipe, gists, Movescount knowledge.
  • sebchastang — published Suunto App Zone interval-training scripts.
  • bwaldvogel/openmoves — Openmoves.
  • iwanders/gps_track_pod — Suunto GPS Track Pod support (MIT), vendored in tools/vendor/gpspod/.
  • evelbulgroz/suunto-t6-sync — Suunto T6/T6c/T6d read support (MIT); basis for the experimental T6 export and GPS-Track-Pod merge.
  • App Zone examples — claha/suunto, follesoe/suunto-ambit-intervals, hefler/SuuntoApps, AdamHodgson/Suunto-Interval-Training, Httqm/Suunto — real App-Zone interval scripts the workout findings were checked against.
  • ruvido/goambit & AlexLBraits/ambit2gpx — independent implementations of the same cloud-free USB paths, confirming they're real.
  • mihaildemidoff/suunto-sml-model — a JAXB model of Suunto's SML format, a reference for the exercise-log work.
  • The Suunto forum community and wanarun.net.

Services & libraries at runtime

  • cyberjunky/python-garminconnect (MIT) — the Garmin Connect client behind activity, weight and health sync.
  • intervals.icu — its public API backs activity/gear import and export, the wellness and weight feeds, and the profile/activity-level writes to the watch.
  • joaodrp/wahoo-systm-mcp — the Wahoo SYSTM workout catalogue the Coach can read from.
  • Anthropic Claude API — optional, powers the Coach chat when you supply your own API key. The app works fully without it.
  • Qt (LGPLv3) — the desktop UI framework; React Native for the Android app.
Questions

F.A.Q.

Found something that's not right from a dev perspective?

Contact me. I have zero experience, but I'm willing to learn.

Found a bug?

Open an issue with logs and screenshots — right here.

Will the Spartan, Suunto 5, 9 and later Suuntos be supported?

No. SuuntoLink and the Suunto app already provide great features for them.

Can we get scheduled workouts and training plans back from Movescount?

I didn't manage it. If you have material that can help, feel free to contact me.

Can you implement X, Y, Z feature?

Propose it — but beware that if I don't have the hardware, it may be complicated to implement.

My watch bugged — what do I do now?!

Go to Mac or Windows, connect to SuuntoLink and reset. Your settings will be lost, but your watch will be alive.

Will you add translations to X, Y, Z language?

For the moment, no — but if anyone fancies doing it, go ahead.
